Case Study: Fire & Life Safety Systems Installation – Eakin Healthcare Factory

  • Client: Eakin Healthcare
  • Location: Comber, Northern Ireland
  • Sector: Industrial / Manufacturing
  • Systems Installed: Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, Disabled Refuge, CCTV, Intruder Alarm, and Access Control Systems

Project Overview

Eakin Healthcare appointed Atlas World to design, supply, and commission a complete suite of fire and life safety systems for their new manufacturing facility in Comber.
As part of a major new-build project, our role was to ensure full compliance with all relevant standards while delivering reliable protection for staff, visitors, and high-value production assets.

The works included the installation of a fully addressable fire alarm system, fire  suppression systems protecting critical plant and control areas, disabled refuge points for assisted evacuation, and an integrated security solution comprising CCTV, access control, and intruder alarm systems.

System Design & Components

The new systems were designed to integrate seamlessly with the building’s wider electrical and mechanical infrastructure. Key elements included:

  • Addressable Fire Alarm System providing automatic detection, manual call points, and sounder coverage throughout.
  • Fire Suppression System installed in designated technical areas, control panels, and electrical switchgear to protect sensitive manufacturing and control equipment.
  • Disabled Refuge System with emergency voice communication points at all upper-floor refuge areas.
  • CCTV System providing comprehensive internal and external surveillance coverage.
  • Intruder Alarm System offering perimeter protection and internal detection.
  • Access Control System managing secure entry points throughout the facility.

Challenges Faced

The project required close coordination with multiple trades during the main construction phase and had tight programme deadlines to align with the client’s operational start-up. Our involvement began early, working alongside the electrical contractor and design team to ensure system containment, cable routing, and device locations were incorporated efficiently within the build schedule.

Approach & Coordination

We maintained regular communication with the client and site management, ensuring all required equipment was delivered to site as needed to support the electrical contractor’s installation programme. Our engineers provided on-site technical support throughout, followed by commissioning and system programming ahead of client handover.

This collaborative approach ensured all systems were installed correctly first-time, avoiding delays and re-work.

Outcome

The project was completed on time and fully compliant with BS 5839-1 and associated standards. The new fire, life safety, and security systems now provide a robust, integrated solution protecting both personnel and critical manufacturing operations.

Compliance Focus

All systems were designed, installed, and commissioned in accordance with BS 5839-1, BS 5839-9, BS EN 50132, and BS EN 50133.
Atlas World ensured full compliance across both fire and security disciplines, providing the client with comprehensive certification and assurance that all installations meet current British Standards and industry best practice.
