Case Study: Energy Monitoring Installation – Apex Housing, Lisburn
- Client: Apex Housing
- Location: Lisburn
- Project Scope: Installation of Automatic Meter Reading system
- Sector: Social Housing
- AMR Monitoring of Electric & Heat Meters
- Project Completion/Duration: May 2025 – ongoing trial
Project Overview
Apex Housing appointed Atlas World to install an Automatic Meter Reading system across a new social housing development in Lisburn. The project forms part of an energy efficiency trial, designed to ensure that air source heat pumps and other energy-efficient systems are operating as intended and optimally for different property types. This trial will help determine which energy systems are most effective for various housing layouts and tenant types, potentially influencing future housing strategies in Northern Ireland.
Implementing an Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system to monitor energy usage in new social housing, providing insight into performance and efficiency of electric and heat systems.
System Design & Components
The systems were designed to capture and report energy usage data in real time, while integrating with temperature sensors for accurate environmental monitoring.
Key elements included:
• AMR System monitoring electric and heat meters across the development, recording data automatically.
• Temperature Sensors to provide outside temperature data, allowing correlation with system performance.
• System designed to operate continuously, enabling long-term analysis and optimisation of energy systems across different property types.

Challenges Faced
• Implementing new technology within a live development while coordinating multiple contractors.
• Ensuring accurate data capture across different heating and electrical systems.
• Working closely with manufacturers, the client, and other trades to maintain system integrity during installation.
Approach & Coordination
Atlas World delivered a phased and collaborative installation, coordinating with all stakeholders to ensure smooth deployment of monitoring equipment.
Data collection began immediately, and engineers provided support to ensure all systems were functioning correctly and securely.
Outcome
The trial is ongoing, but early results allow for optimisation of energy-efficient systems according to property type, tenant occupancy, and even building orientation.
This ground-breaking work has the potential to shape energy strategies for social housing across Northern Ireland, guiding decisions on which systems provide the best performance and cost efficiency.
Compliance Focus
All works were carried out in accordance with:
• BS 7671 – Requirements for Electrical Installations (IET Wiring Regulations)
Atlas World’s engineers ensured full testing and documentation, providing confidence in system reliability and long-term compliance.
